Once again, harsh weather conditions hit Progreso, and the cold front resulted in the strong presence of sargassum on the shores of this municipality, mainly in areas of Chicxulub Puerto.

After the cold front number 16, residents of Chicxulub Puerto and Uaymitún reported a signficantly large amount of seaweed on the shore near Kilometro 12 of the road between these two beach communities, totally obstructing the beach access.

Other areas of Progreso also registered the same phenomenon, becoming evident in segments of the western beaches of the municipality, where the organic material is abundant. It is worth mentioning that, according to scientific studies, the arrival of seaweed to the shore, helps the recovery of beaches.

At the main beach of Progreso, where the boardwalk and the international pier are located, municipal authorities have been responsible for maintaining the beaches as clean as possible, since the sargassum keeps local visitors and foreign tourists at bay.

Local businessmen and restauranteurs declare that if cruise passengers and local visitors observe the presence of sargassum on the beach, they end up avoiding the site, which generates heavy economic losses to local businesses, which maintain their stability thanks to the tourism market.
