Members of the civil association Comisarios Unidos del Oriente, based in Valladolid, Yucatán; held a protest in the city’s main square on Monday Jan 21. The protesters displayed a blanket and posters with protest messages for several hours, in a rarely seen demonstration in this Magic Town.
Comisarios Unidos del Oriente is affiliated with the National Plan Coordinator of Ayala (CNPA) and the National Movement (MN). The CNPA has as its motto “To rescue Mexico, we must rescue the countryside!” (Para rescatar a México hay que rescatar al campo).
The Izamal demonstration was headed by engineer Rigoberto Cruz, coordinator of Programs of Comisarios Unidos del Oriente, who came on behalf of the state leader, Marcelino Sánchez Antonio, who in his Facebook account says he is an independent entrepreneur and leader of the tenants of the municipal market Donato Bates in Valladolid, where the mayor is Enrique Ayora Sosa, from MORENA political party.
The protesters also distributed flyers to people in downtown Izamal. And it seems like the protests have emerged in several communities of Yucatan, such as Valladolid.
Protesters demand the following points:
- -A general law of consultation for indigenous peoples and communities.
- – No more “megaprojects” that damage the ecosystems, such as pig farms.
- – Stop water pollution.
- – Stop persecutions of social fighters.
- – Justice, development and social peace in rural communities.
- -A real consultation about the Maya Train project.
-Justice for the murder of the ex-governor of Mocri-CNPA-MN. (The members of Comisarios Unidos del Oriente demand justice from Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of Mexico).
The latter in reference to Noé Jiménez Pablo, indigenous leader of Chiapas and member of the Independent Regional Movement (Mocri) -CNPA-MN, who on Thursday Jan. 17 was shot to death along with others who stood in front of the Palace Municipal de Amatán for five months demanding the dismissal of the mayor, Manuel de Jesús Carpio Mayorga, from Morena.
