Whomever decides to harrass any woman will face up to 36 hours and anyone who decides to relieve themselves of any bodily function will receive a sanction of 30 minimum wages ($2,500 pesos) according to new rulebook update.
This Thursday Feb. 14th, the president of the Commission of Public Safety and Traffic of the City of Mérida, Jesús Pérez Ballote, explained that the aforementioned regulation was created in June 2003 and since then it had not been updated, so the council members, as well as the president began the analysis of the reform that considers, among other things, increasing the penalties for street harassment, which currently stipulates a warning, but now it will constitute an arrest of up to 36 hours.
Jesús Peréz Ballote made it clear that the sanctions will be applied by the six local judges who abide by the mayor.
Another update announced by the Commission of Public Safety and Traffic of the City of Mérida, is the penalization in using the city streets as restrooms. The fine will be of $2,500 pesos for anybody caught urinating on streets or public roads, as opposed to the usual amonestation, as this is now considered an act of exhibitionism or public sex, and anyone who violates this law will be liable to a fine of up to 30 minimum wages (approximately $3,000 pesos) and 36 hours detention.
