Progreso´s tragedy… The sad aftermath

PROGRESO YUCATAN.- Pedro Alfonso López Cabrera, would never have imagined that Sunday, February 17, was the day his life would take a major turn. His 7-year-old daughter, Scarlet and his girlfriend Kimberly age 30, died, crushed by the cornice of the restaurant bar “Mocambo” that collapsed on top of them the day before yesterday at 3:40 in the afternoon.

The three of them arrived to the port on Sunday to have lunch, enjoy the day and walk around. When they were about to return to Mérida, the fatal collapse of the “Mocambo” marquee, located on Calle 68 with 21, happened.

Scarlet and Kimberly walked together and when passing in front of the Mocambo, along with other pedestrians, the collapse happened and both were buried by the rubbish. The little girl was rescued alive taken to the Social Security clinic, but she didn´t make it. 7-year-old Scarlet died of brain- trauma, ruptured liver and abdominal trauma.

Pedro López Cabrera, 30 years old, resident of Polígono 108 in Mérida, lived a nightmare. He could not believe what happened, he cried and shouted helplessly. A few hours later, Mr. Lopez had to identified the corpse of his daughter, who was in the third grade and his girlfriend Kimberly, who was from Guadalajara, and worked as an English teacher at the American English Center in Mérida, where classes were suspended yesterday.

The third victim has been identified. He´s name was Diego Armando Bojórquez Collí, 31 years old. He was a street vendor nicknamed “Yoyo”. He died of head trauma as he was being transported to Progreso´s IMSS hospital.

Another trader, José Fermín Chan Pech, a native of Kanasín and a resident of Mérida, on his Facebook commented that one hour before the tragedy he was at “Mocambo” offering his merchandise but nobody bought anything from him. He went up to the second floor, where the  palapa is and standing on the ledge that later fell he recorded a video of the malecón. “Luckily it was not my day, it was not my turn today,” he wrote.

The State Prosecutor’s Office released yesterday afternoon the bodies of the three deceased to their relatives.

No criminal charges
The State Prosecutor’s Office and Progreso´s Municipal Police reported that there are no detainees on the “Mocambo” case. The manager of the establishment, was briefly held as a precautionary measure the day before yesterday, but released later on.  A person by the name Carlos Baeza Manzanero apparently legal representative of the restaurant-bar “Mocambo” and its owners, covered all expenses for the five wounded, and attended to the relatives of the deceased. Mr. Baeza Manzanero will pay the compensation for the three deaths and the expenses of the injured

According to newspaper Excelsior, Mr. Carlos Baeza and his company were one of Ivonne Ortega´s main sponsors during her political campaign for governor in 2011.
