MÉRIDA, YUC.- After intense police operations in the north of Merida, on Monday Feb. 18, the Yucatan State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) managed to capture a gang of nine Colombians who arrived to the state capital exclusively to commit crimes within the city and other parts of the state.
Four South American suspects (two men and two women) were detained for possession of marijuana and firearms. While five other Colombians (4 men and one woman) were arrested for burglary.
The detainees, whose ages fluctuate between 29 and 38 years of age, were found in possession of three vehicles, including a van leased in Cancun.

The capture was achieved through an intense series of operations in the Altabrisa area, that caught the attention of the people and generated numerous speculations. Mérida residents published several videos and photographs on social networks, featuring the police mobilization in different parts of the city.
The State Public Security Secretariat (Secretaría Estatal de Seguridad Pública: SSP) declared in a statement that nine Colombian citizens were arrested during the operation that culminated on Monday Feb. 18th, 2019.
During the operations carried out by agents of the SSP, three vehicles were stopped on Periférico Norte, in the stretch between Avenida Yucatan and Santa Gertrudis Copó, where several police vehicles could be observed, as they detained the suspects’ cars.
The impressive police mobilization caught the motorists’ attention as they were driving under the overpass of Avenida Yucatan and Periférico.
The legal status of the detainees is still to be determined by the corresponding authorities.
