Tulum, Quintana Roo.- A female jaguar was run over on the evening of Sunday March 10th, not far from the security stop on the Playa del Carmen / Tulum highway near the entrance to the Rio Secreto and Xcaret parks. The vehicle that hit the feline, totally destroyed its skull.
The report was received after 2100 hours and the municipal environmental personnel was alerted by citizens about the presence of a feline lying dead in the low speed lane of Highway 307. When the specialized personnel came they found out that it was a young female specimen of ‘panthera onca’, lifeless and with a fractured skull, as well as a detached eye.

The authorities will proceed with the necropsy to confirm the cause of the death of the feline which is the third jaguar killed in similar circumstances in the last 10 months. The most recent in this area occurred in May under similar conditions. Authorities will proceed with the identification of the “rosette pattern” to determine if this specimen is within the wildlife census.
A study by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) revealed that the jaguar (Panthera onca) is in greater danger of extinction than it was originally known due to the loss of its habitat.
