After opposition legislators warned that MORENA party promoted the so-called citizen consultation on the “Revocation of the President’s Mandate” as a strategy for the 2021 elections.

“I listened to the proposal made by legislators talking about it being a reelection essay (…) Monday I am going to put here a commitment that I am not going to re-elect myself, signed, I have the word, what I consider most important in my life is my honesty, but I am going to make that public commitment anyway,” he said in his morning conference.

“I am going to say that I am a supporter of democracy, that I agree with the saying of “effective suffrage no re-election”, – I am a “maderista” (In reference of Francisco I. Madero) one of the men I most admire, he has been called, the apostle of democracy. I am not an ambitious, I will serve, if the people decide, 6 years, and that at the end of 2024 I will end my term”.

Congress approved yesterday, by qualified majority, to incorporate the “revocation of mandate” to the Constitution.

The ruling establishes that the revocation may be called by Congress at the request of the President, or by 33 percent of any of the Houses or by at least 3 percent of the citizens registered in the nominal list of voters.
