CANCUN Quintana Roo. At around 2115 hours, residents of Colonia “Villa Magna” reported to a 911 operator, gunfire and the leasing company’s vehicles on fire. The shots came from men armed with machine guns and hammers who burned down Wednesday April 3 a luxury car lot located on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard , main artery leading to Cancun International Airport, after a shooting and setting the business on fire.
Planet Car´s, the company attacked by organized crime lost at least 8 luxury vehicles: A two door Mercedes Benz, two Suburban vans, two Harley Davidson motorcycles and other vehicles that cannot be identified from the fire and debris.
On Planet Car´s website the rental company offers luxury rides such as Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Land Rover or Jaguar, mid-range as Volkswagen or Ford, and armored vehicles. Allegedly it is also a supplier of a manufacturer of armored glass. The company, according to their website, has more than 30 years of experience in the State of Mexico; this Cancun branch has been open since 2014.
Jesus Alberto Capella Ibarra, the state secretary of Public Security in his Twitter account, reported that the police found a white van with the smell of gasoline, which allegedly transported those responsible for the incident. He also said, the area was already protected, and there were no risks to the surrounding population. The incident, which left millions in losses, caused the Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard to close in both directions.
No truce from violence
For the past year, the Forensic Medical Service of Cancun, Quintana Roo, has been working with scarce materials, from a private building, with a single dissection bed, little ventilation and dozens of bodies that overflow the facility, in an improvised refrigeration box.
The place where unclaimed bodies are housed is barely adapted to have the dissection room in the same space, four or five broken metal tables, a sink without water and some drawers where knives, scissors, drills and dissection gloves are stirred. The experts have managed to identify only 40 percent of the 260 bodies that are sheltered at this place.
Violence just doesn´t seem to stop in Cancun´s non-touristic areas. Yesterday two more men were executed in region 247, bringing the number of homicides perpetrated this year in Cancun to 119, plus 58 in Playa del Carmen and 7 in Tulum.
Governor Carlos Joaquín has said that insecurity rates in Cancun are on the decline. Mr. governor, do you really think so?
