Mexico City, May 6, 2019.- “The Port of Progreso is continously improving its infrastructure and services, as the significant growth registered in terms of logisitics demands it”, said Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal during the meeing he hedl with executives of the company APM Terminals, which holds the concession for the maritime container terminal.
Accompanied by the director of the Port Administration Integral (API) Progreso, Agustín Arrollo Toledo and the head of the Ministry of Economic Development and Labor (Sefoet), Ernesto Herrera Novelo, the Governor held a working meeting with the director of the Latin American region of the Dutch firm, Leo Huisman, where it was highlighted that in the last 10 years the cargo movement increased in the Port of Progress by 100%, going from 60,000 TEUs (equivalent unit to 20 feet, for its acronym in English), that were reported in 2008, to 140,000 in 2018.
During the first quarter of 2019, 45,706 containers passed through Progreso, which means an increase of 48.9% over the same period last year.
Vila Dosal pointed out the need to invest in mobile cranes to transport containers, in addition to fixed cranes with long arms that allow to handle cargo at greater distances, for larger ships.
Also, he considered important the need to have a computer program that streamlines the logistics process of loading and unloading and, at the same time, gives access to the georeferential tracking of merchandise or product, in order to give certainty to the user and be able to accurately detect every single container.
In this way, according to the Governor, the Port of Progreso will be even more productive, competitive.
Also present at the meeting were the Ambassador of Holland in Mexico, Margriet Leemhuis, as well as the APM Terminales Yucatán strategy directors of the Latin America region, Flemming Falkentoft and Martijn Koolen; aw well as the Undersecretary of Investment and Economic Development, Gerardo Díaz de Zavala.
Governor Vila Dosal and the general coordinator of Ports and Merchant Marine of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT), Héctor López Gutiérrez, signed this week a collaboration agreement that will allow the Port of Progress and the main coastal points of Yucatan to be promoted, through a series of projects to strengthen the port infrastructure of the state that detonate the industry and tourist activity in the area.
