A rescue boat from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) managed to save three people, 16 kilometers (10 miles) offshore, in front of the port of Progreso, Yucatán, after a recreational boat turned over.
The accident occurred around 6:00 am on Thursday May 30th, when the “Second Chace” vessel was near buoys 6 and 8 of the port of Progreso, approximately 16 kilometers from the coastline, and at a certain moment the ship capsized; three people fell into the sea and were left adrift.
Fortunately, they managed to be rescued by the maritime unit 840 of the SSP; the people on board the sunken boat were identified as Marcos Sosa (owner of the ship), José Rivero and Fernando López (crew), who were transferred to the shelter in Yucalpetén, where they were assisted by paramedical personnel to rule out any injuries or health problems.
According to the report, the boat, indicated as a maritime recreational vehicle, sailed from the tourist marina “Alacranes” in the port of shelter of Yucalpetén, and they planned to return during the course of the day.
However, the boat apparently damaged, started to fill up with water, and the crew members issued a distress signal, that allowed to activate the search and rescue device of its occupants.
Finally, the boat ended up sinking at the site of the incident, without further details being reported.
