The environmental devastation attributed to the pork meat company Kekén is part of the issues that are expressed in a mural painted by students in Kinchil, Yucatán, where a few months ago ejidatarios and promoters of ecological tourism denounced the formation of a “black lagoon” for alleged illegal discharge of wastewater of this livestock company that recently opened a plant in the municipality of Homun, Yuc.
The mural is a project that is being developed by students of Social Management of the UNAM, that seeks to reflect the importance of healthy living, as well as the importance of plants and animals, which they consider to be killed by industry, corporations and their polluting development, because they do not respect the people’s rights for healthy living and self-determination.
Jesús Solís Alpuche, one of the promoters of the mural, reported that Maya children also contributed with a section of the mural, where they expose the damage that companies such as Kekén are causing to the lands that belong to the indigenous communities of the state of Yucatán.
Solís Alpuche stated that the idea is to demonstrate that hundreds of hectares of forest have been devastated in different municipalities across the Peninsula, in order to build mega farms that do not benefit the communities and, on the contrary, they cause serious environmental problems for the locals.
A few days ago, in the framework of the World Environment Day, activists and residents of Homún and Kinchil publicly called Kekén a “socially and environmentally irresponsible company”.
