During the first months of the AMLO administration, a historical increase of the criminal incidence has been registered in Mexico. Not only in the number of murders, that has reached a total of 18,513 cases so far in the year, but also in other illicit acts such as robbery, which shows record figuresfor the last 20 years.
According to El Economista, while homicides show an increase of 34% in relation to the year 2000 (when13,746 murders were registered from January to May of that year); robbery to business (with and without violence) is also on the rise, as in May 2000, 4,442 investigative files were opened for this crime, while in May 2019, more than twice robberies have been registered, with a total of 9,854 open files, that is an increase of 121% in 19 years.
47,441 research files have been opened so far this year for theft to business, 10.8% more than in the same period of 2018, which recorded 42,789 cases.
Mexico City, with 10,067 open files, is the state with the highest recurrence of this crimeduring the first five months of the year (from January to May 2019), according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.
Street robbery
33,482 cases of street robbery have been registered so far this year nationwide, (75.8% were reported as violent), and 8,675 of these cases took place in Mexico City.
Robberies on public transit
14,615 cases of robberies on public transit have been registered so far this 2019 in Mexico (69.5% were reported as violent), 5,174 of these cases took place in Mexico City.
AMLO keeps saying that the violence situation was “inherited” from the previous administration, but the fact is that it’s been 7 months of his term already, evidently the situation is getting worst everyday, and there is no sign of improvement in this subject, since the federal government does not have a properly established strategy to control the prevailing criminal activity in the country.
