Progreso needs tourist attractions to make cruise passengers stay at the port

The “Carnival Dream”,third cruise of this week, disappointed Progreso service providers on Thursday October 17th, who expected good flow of cash, given the size of the boat and 4,406 passengers it brought, sadly only about 400 tourists stayed in the port.

The best cruise of the week was the “Carnival Fantasy”, which arrived on Wednesday October 16th, directly from Mobile, Alabama,  they estimated that about one thousand passengers arrived in small groups, they got off the ship, and walked along the boardwalk and beach, leaving a good economic spill for the local economy.

Vendors, waiters and other service providers stated that, the “Carnival Dream” that arrived from Cozumel, did not leave much cash, only a few passengers went down to the dock, most of them stayed on the ship because they had already spent “a day on the beach” at the Caribbean island.

The “Carnival Dream” docked around 10 in the morning at the cruise terminal. Many passengers disembarked and boarded tourist buses that transferred them to the archeological zones, and they came back directly to the boat around 6 PM (none of them set foot on Progreso though).

The few passengers that decided to spend the day in Progreso, arrived around 11 in the morning and walked along the boardwalk. But, contrary to expected, some bought beer and sat down under the palapas,  and a while later, they returned to the ship. Some of the street vendors indicated that tourists used the term “no money” when they were approached.

This is where we ask ourselves and our readers, what can the local authorities, and people in charge of the boardwalk, pier, and beaches of Progreso do to renovate and improve the image and tourist attractions of this Yucatecan beach destination?
