Tariffs do not help, warns a Yucatecan business leader

Although measures such as tariffs from the United States and Ecuador may discourage trade, Yucatan will continue to be attractive due to its logistical position and industrial activity, said the president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) in Mérida, Emilio Blanco del Villar.

“We have manufacturing, agriculture agribusiness, and a strong export sector in products such as pork. Any trade barrier affects us, but we have something to do at the local level,” he noted.

Regarding the call, President Claudia Sheinbaum had with her United States counterpart, Donald Trump, the business leader highlighted the importance of temporarily avoiding 25% tariffs, which would affect the regional production chain.

He also expressed that although Ecuador’s 27% tariff on Mexican products is high, its impact will not be significant for the national economy. However, he considered that any measure of this type is an obstacle to bilateral trade.

“Any tariff is not positive in a bilateral trade relationship. Although trade between Mexico and Ecuador remains small, instead of encouraging it, it hinders it. What we should look for is to establish clear rules to grow both markets,” he said.

The president of Coparmex in Mérida stressed that the main objective of nations must be to increase business and strengthen their economies. “We must always seek to trade more and generate greater economic activity. “It’s what we have to work on,” he said.

In the case of the situation with the United States, he stated that “the North American trade bloc, made up of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, must seek to generate more business in a win-win relationship, instead of establishing tariffs.”

Furthermore, he recalled that the bases will be defined in the next 30 days to strengthen the trilateral relationship so that North America remains a solid economic region that generates jobs.

“When North America is stronger there are more jobs and opportunities for everyone. Without a doubt, there are many pending issues on the agenda, especially migration and the fight against drug trafficking,” he indicated.

“Even with these obstacles, we must continue working on economic dynamics and best practices so that Yucatán continues its growth,” he stated. Today the state only contributes 0.4% of national exports, so it is essential to promote strategies such as “nearshoring” and “friendshoring”, as well as promote greater national investments to expand markets, he added.
